The terrain is relatively straightforward, nothing is impossible to cross, but it's very easy to lose one’s bearings, as the circle representing one’s approximate position on the map inexorably widens. And this increases the chance of adding extra kilometers...
The Gazelles are going to head east. Towards an area devoid of life. They will venture into a cirque so vast that it will be difficult to see all the features. The enormous red cliffs of Aferdou (mountains resembling a tajine dish) will be guides throughout the leg... unless the wind picks up and visibility is reduced to the rocks in front of the car...
And then it will be back to the bivouac (or not, in some cases) and the evening routine. Stopping off in the rankings office, setting up the tent, visiting the mechanics. Plotting the route for the next day's leg. A moment of relaxation at the bar. Supper and a good night's sleep to recharge their batteries. Tomorrow is another day, and a new bivouac awaits... after a marathon leg!
